Homemade Rice Baby Cereal
White rice milled to a fine powder, then cooked with water into a smooth, mild cereal for babies.
Recipe in testing: I'm cooking it in my TM7™ and will update the steps and the photo with my own.

Rice cereal is one of the mildest first foods, and the homemade version needs only white rice and water. Milling the rice into a fine powder first lets it cook into a smooth, creamy cereal in about ten minutes. There is no sugar, salt or honey in it.
The Thermomix® TM7™ mills a jar of rice powder at once, then cooks one batch while it stirs so it does not stick or form lumps. A short blend at the end takes care of any grainy bits. Keep the rest of the powder in the pantry, and stir in a little breast milk or formula after cooking if you like.

Instructions
- Place the rice in the mixing bowl and mill 1 min/speed 10, until you have a fine powder.
- Transfer the rice powder to a clean, dry jar with a tight lid, leaving 40 g (1/3 cup) in the mixing bowl. The rest is ready for 4 more batches.
- Add the water to the mixing bowl and cook 10 min/90°C (195°F)/speed 3, until thick and creamy.
- With the measuring cup in place, blend 20 sec/speed 4-8, increasing speed gradually, so no grainy bits are left.
- Let the cereal cool until lukewarm. Just before serving, stir in a little breast milk, formula or water if you want it thinner, check the temperature on your wrist and serve a small portion in a bowl.
Tips
- Ask your pediatrician before starting solids and about the right texture for your baby's age. Pediatricians often suggest offering a variety of grains, such as oats, barley and rice, rather than rice cereal at every meal, so ask what is best for your baby.
- Store-bought baby cereals are usually fortified and homemade cereal is not, so ask your pediatrician how it fits into your baby's meals.
- Add breast milk or formula only after cooking, once the cereal has cooled. Keep the plain cooked cereal covered in the fridge up to 2 days, or freeze it in an ice cube tray for up to 2 months. The rice powder keeps 1 month in a dry jar.
- Once your baby has tried each food on its own, stir in a spoonful of pear, peach or sweet potato puree.
