Recipe in testing: I'm cooking it in my TM7™ and will update the steps and the photo with my own.

A small glass jar of orange beef and sweet potato puree with a baby spoon, a halved sweet potato and a piece of cooked beef beside it.

Sweet potato is a favorite first food because it is naturally sweet and turns silky when blended. Here it is cooked together with small cubes of lean beef, so the puree has a gentle, savory flavor and a warm orange color. There is no salt, sugar or honey, only beef, sweet potato and water.

The Thermomix® TM7™ simmers the beef first on reverse at soft speed, then the sweet potato joins it in the same bowl. A long blend at the end turns the meat into a soft, even puree. For older babies you can blend it for less time and keep a few tiny, soft pieces.

Instructions

  1. Place the beef and water in the mixing bowl. Place the simmering basket on the mixing bowl lid instead of the measuring cup and cook 20 min/100°C (212°F)/reverse/speed soft.
  2. Add the sweet potato and stir with the spatula so the cubes sit in the liquid. Cook 20 min/100°C (212°F)/reverse/speed soft, until the sweet potato is very soft and the beef shows no pink inside.
  3. Let it rest 5 minutes with the lid closed. Put the measuring cup in place and blend 1 min/speed 5-10, increasing speed gradually.
  4. Scrape down the sides with the spatula and blend 1 min/speed 10, until the beef is completely smooth. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, if your baby needs a thinner puree.
  5. Let it cool until lukewarm. Stir well, check the temperature on the inside of your wrist and serve a small portion in a bowl.

Tips

  • Ask your pediatrician before starting solids and before offering meat for the first time. Start with a very smooth, thin puree; as your baby grows, blend 20 to 30 seconds less so it stays thicker with tiny soft pieces of beef.
  • Do not add salt, sugar, honey or store-bought broth. The beef cooking water already gives the puree a gentle, savory taste.
  • Keep it covered in the refrigerator up to 2 days, or freeze it in an ice cube tray and use the cubes within 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator, warm until steaming and cool before serving.
  • Use a real sweet potato with orange flesh. A white batata also works, but the puree will be paler and a little thicker, so add more water.
