Recipe in testing: I'm cooking it in my TM7™ and will update the steps and the photo with my own.

A small glass jar of smooth orange red lentil puree with a baby spoon and a little pile of red lentils beside it.

Red lentils are a handy pantry food for little ones: they cook quickly, need no soaking and melt into a soft puree. A carrot adds a gentle sweetness and deepens the orange color. The recipe has no salt, sugar or honey, only lentils, carrot and water, and an optional drop of olive oil.

In the Thermomix® TM7™, the carrot is chopped first, then the lentils and water cook in the same bowl with the simmering basket on the lid to stop splashes. A final blend makes it velvety. The puree thickens as it cools, so keep a little warm water nearby.

Instructions

  1. Rinse the lentils in a fine strainer under cold water until the water runs clear, and check for small stones. Drain.
  2. Place the carrot in the mixing bowl and chop 5 sec/speed 5. Scrape down the sides with the spatula.
  3. Add the lentils and water. Place the simmering basket on the mixing bowl lid instead of the measuring cup and cook 20 min/100°C (212°F)/speed 1.
  4. Check that the lentils are completely soft. If not, cook 5 min/100°C (212°F)/speed 1 more.
  5. Add the olive oil, if using. Put the measuring cup in place and blend 1 min/speed 5-10, increasing speed gradually, until very smooth. Add warm water, 1 tablespoon at a time, to reach the texture your baby needs.
  6. Let it cool until lukewarm. Stir well, check the temperature on the inside of your wrist and serve a small portion in a bowl.

Tips

  • Ask your pediatrician before starting solids and before offering lentils. Start with a thin, very smooth puree and small amounts; as your baby grows, leave it thicker, and later serve the cooked lentils just mashed with a fork.
  • Do not add salt, sugar or honey. When the rest of the family eats it too, take out the baby's portion first and season the rest.
  • The puree thickens a lot in the refrigerator. Stir in a little warm water when you reheat it.
  • Keep it covered in the refrigerator up to 3 days, or freeze it in an ice cube tray and use the cubes within 2 months.
