Chicken and Vegetable Baby Puree

Chicken, carrots, peas and potato, steamed and blended into a soft puree for babies. No salt, no sugar.

Recipe in testing: I'm cooking it in my TM7™ and will update the steps and the photo with my own.

A small glass jar of chicken and vegetable puree with a silicone baby spoon, fresh carrots, green peas and a cooked chicken breast beside it.

This mild puree brings together tender chicken breast, sweet carrots, green peas and a little potato, which gives it a creamy texture without adding milk or butter. There is no salt, sugar or honey in it, just the food and some of its own cooking water, so your baby tastes each ingredient as it is.

In the Thermomix® TM7™, the carrots and potato cook in the simmering basket while the chicken and peas steam in the Varoma on top. Then everything goes back into the bowl and blends until smooth. One batch makes about ten small portions, and they freeze well in an ice cube tray.

Instructions

  1. Place the water in the mixing bowl. Insert the simmering basket and add the carrots and potato.
  2. Spread the chicken in a single layer in the Varoma dish and add the peas around it. Close the Varoma, set it in position and steam 25 min/Varoma/speed 1.
  3. Check that the chicken is white all the way through and reaches 74°C (165°F) in the center, and that a knife slides easily into the carrots. If not, steam 5 min/Varoma/speed 1 more.
  4. Set the Varoma aside. Lift out the simmering basket with the spatula and pour the cooking water into a measuring cup. Save it.
  5. Place the chicken, peas, carrots, potato and 150 g (2/3 cup) of the saved cooking water in the mixing bowl. With the measuring cup in place, blend 1 min/speed 5-10, increasing speed gradually.
  6. Scrape down the sides with the spatula and blend 30 sec/speed 10 for a very smooth puree. Add more cooking water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it is as thin as your baby needs.
  7. Let the puree cool until lukewarm. Stir it well, check the temperature on the inside of your wrist and serve a small portion in a bowl.

Tips

  • Ask your pediatrician before starting solids and before adding new foods. First purees are usually very smooth and thin; as your baby grows, blend less and leave it thicker, and later mash the vegetables with a fork and chop the chicken very fine.
  • Do not add salt, sugar or honey. The vegetables and the chicken cooking water give the puree all the flavor it needs.
  • Serve from a small bowl, not from the storage jar, and throw away what your baby does not finish.
  • Keep the puree covered in the refrigerator up to 2 days, or freeze it in an ice cube tray, then move the cubes to a freezer bag and use them within 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator and warm until steaming, then cool before serving.
